For starters it is important to know the definitions of the four basic card groups:
  • Aces - A (can be used as either a high or low car)
  • Low Cards - 5,4,3,2
  • Middle Cards - 10,9,8,7,6
  • High Cards - K, Q, J

The following terms are all related to Omaha Hi-Lo and some may be utilized in other variations of poker:

  • Hole Cards - the 4 cards the players are dealt face down
  • Community Cards - 5 cards dealt by the dealer, face up, that are used by all players
  • Scoop - having both the best high and low hand, thus "scooping" the entire pot
  • Wheel - signified by having the cards 5 4 3 2 A. The hand can be played as the low hand, a straight for the high hand or both for the scoop
  • Suited Player Hand - where two of the four hole cards are of the same suit
  • Double Suited Player Hand - two of the players hole cards are of one suit and the other two are of another suit
  • Nut Hand - an unbeatable high or low hand, such as 5 4 3 2 A. The nut hand can also be referred to as a "lock"
  • Flop, Turn and River - the community cards termed in the order of distribution where flop is the first three cards, turn is the fourth and the river is the final card
  • Fast Play - when a player chooses to get as many other players to fold by betting , raising and re-raising
  • Slow Play - when a player just checks or calls bets in order to keep other players in and increase the pot odds
  • Check/Fold - checking is done when no one else has raised or placed a bet, while folding is recommended if your cards aren't great and you can't afford to raise or call the play
