A person, called the caller picks numbers randomly out of a sac/hat or any other more modern device. The numbers are usually up to 75 or 90 in all. As the numbers are called, all of the players scan their card or cards to see if that number appears. If the number appears it is marked off for the rest of the game.
The pairs are usually announced quickly, so be sure to pay close attention to your pairs and mark them as quickly and accurately on your bingo card(s). The caller will keep announcing pairs until someone reaches a bingo. If there is more than one winner, the prize is usually shared among all the winners. Once someone has won a Bingo, you buy a new card(s) and the announcer will begin announcing a new group of pairs. When playing in Las Vegas there are many variations of Bingo, such as "Letter X," "Six Pack," "Coverall," and "Indian Style Papoose."
The first player who the numbers on his card have been all called - shouts bingo. He then collects the prize money (usually less a specified percentage, if that is permitted by local law). In another variation, the central square on the card is free, and the first player on whose card five of the called numbers appear in a row (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) is the winner. The prize may be anything from luxurious toys to thousands of dollars in cash, and even cars. Bingo is legal in most U.S. states that prohibit other forms of gambling.
It is permitted in Ireland when the profits are for charity; and it is closely regulated in the United Kingdom, where lotto halls were subjected to a tax in 1966. |
